A Lonely River

A lonely river in a dusty plain
Making a pattern of watery chain
Goes on for as far as eyes can see
For eternity into the distant sea

Does not know the very banks
Protecting it with supporting flanks
Even the lone companion is unknown
The sun who has come and gone

Without any words or even a salutation
In the long journey of its salvation
To its lord the mighty sea
That blesses it with gratitude and glee

On completing the journey alone
Without any help or a guiding stone
On and on for years at times
Fighting solitude, silence and rough climes

The goal was worth the arduous trail
The shores washed in the Holy Grail
Welcomed it into its mighty fold
To live there for ever and never get old
